<p>Markets have largely shrugged off Russia's intensifying invasion of Ukraine, with all major US indices posting gains. </p>



<p>The S&amp;P 500 climbed 2.21%, and the Nasdaq and Dow posted respective gains of 1.53% and 2.51% respectively. The increases could have been the result of recently <meta charset="utf-8"><a href="https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/CUUR0000SA0&amp;output_view=pct_1mth" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">released</a> reports showing inflation continuing to break records. Major cryptocurrencies also rose.</p>



<p>Equities often hold up well in inflationary periods. </p>



<p>Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, meanwhile, on Friday criticized allies for leaving the country alone in its bid to stop the Russian advance.</p>



<p>"This morning, we are defending our country alone," <meta charset="utf-8">Zelenskyy said. "Just like yesterday, the most powerful country in the world looked on from a distance. Russia was hit with sanctions yesterday, but these are not enough to get these foreign troops off our soil. Only through solidarity and determination can this be achieved."</p>

<p>In terms of crypto, bitcoin rose more than 2%, and ether notched a nearly 5% gain. The day's biggest gainer by the close of stock markets was LUNA, which soared almost 11%. </p>

<p>Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine sent cryptocurrency and stock markets into a tailspin early Thursday. But as the full extent of the military assault became clear, investors jumped back in, driving a powerful recovery. </p>



<p>US President Joe Biden, who had repeatedly warned an invasion was imminent, said Russia would bear the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IIZNvhJqEc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consequences</a> of “an assault on the people of Ukraine without provocation, without justification, without necessity.”</p>



<p>Biden imposed a raft of new sanctions to “limit Russia’s ability to do business in dollars, euros, pounds and yen, to be part of the global economy.” The sanctions were purposely designed “to maximize a long-term impact on Russia and to minimize impact on the United States and our allies,” Biden added.</p>



<p>As traders in the US parsed the news, the S&amp;P 500 plunged, starting the day nearly 2.5% down. Alongside other indices, it recovered later and ended trading up 1.5%. The Nasdaq and Dow likewise first declined before paring losses. The Nasdaq ended the day with a notable 3.44% increase.</p>

<p>Bitcoin started the day down as much as 7.5% but managed to end stock trading hours up by 3.5%. Ether was even more volatile, dropping by as much as 10.5% before closing up 2.22%.</p>

<p>As Ukraine's plight intensifies, equity and crypto markets continued their downturn Wednesday. </p>



<p>John Kirby, a spokesperson for the Pentagon, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGJFRcYhFXk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Russian forces have continued to amass along the Ukrainian border.</p>



<p>"Russian forces continue to assemble closer to the border and put themselves in an advanced stage of readiness to act and to conduct military action in Ukraine at virtually any time now," Kirby said. "We believe they are ready."</p>



<p>Asked if Russia had continued its advance into the pro-Russia regions in Donbas, Kirby said the Pentagon can't confirm "with any great specificity" the numbers, but "we certainly believe that that's happening."</p>



<p>Latvian Prime Minister Arturs Krisjanis Karins, however, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/23/europe/russian-troops-donbas-latvian-pm/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">told CNN</a> that Russia is moving more forces and tanks into the territories. </p>



<p>"By any definition, that's a crossing of a sovereign territory into a neighboring country," Karins said. </p>



<p>Investors have continued selling as uncertainty builds, driving the S&amp;P 500 to its lowest point since June 2021. The Nasdaq and Dow have also dropped to lows of nearly eight months.</p>

<p>Bitcoin extended losses by the close of stock trading, dropping around 0.7%. Other cryptos managed to stay mostly flat or marginally in the black. Ether rose by half a percentage point, while the layer-1 altcoin LUNA booked a considerable 12% gain.</p>

<p>Russia sent troops that will perform "peacekeeping functions" into two Russian-backed Ukrainian territories.</p>



<p>This move has heightened fears that a broader Russian invasion of Ukraine is imminent. The US and a number of other nations have imposed heavy sanctions on Russia in an effort to deter further advances. </p>



<p>In addition to sanctions, Biden said the US would continue providing assistance to Ukraine and NATO.</p>



<p>"The US will continue to provide defensive assistance to Ukraine in the meantime and will continue to reinforce and reassure our NATO allies," <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MopkhrfXxQQ" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Biden </a><meta charset="utf-8"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MopkhrfXxQQ">said</a>. "Today, in response to Russia's admission that it will not withdraw its forces from Belarus, I have authorized additional movements of US forces and equipment already stationed in Europe to strengthen our Baltic allies." </p>



<p>Added Biden: "Let me be clear, these are totally defensive on our part. We have no intention of fighting Russia."</p>



<p>Rising geopolitical turmoil between Russia, Ukraine and NATO have not been kind to markets. The S&amp;P 500 ended the day down over 1%. The Nasdaq and Dow, fell too, dropping by just under 1% and 1.42%, respectively. </p>

<p>Bitcoin, ether and other cryptos ended the day down as well. Bitcoin dropped by over 0.70% by the end of equity markets while ether saw a drop of 1.70%. Some altcoins, like XRP, took big hits and dropped by nearly 7%.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bitcoin and European markets fall after Putin addresses the Russian people</h3>



<p>European equity markets fell Monday as Russian President Vladimir Putin pushed through plans to recognize the independence of two Russia-backed territories in Ukraine, stoking the threat of an invasion. Cryptocurrencies were unscathed. </p>



<p>Putin outlined the move in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W57I2mzAr9c" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">speech</a>, saying any further bloodshed would be on the Ukraine government's conscience. </p>



<p>“As for those who captured and are holding on to power in Kyiv, we demand that they immediately cease military action," Putin said. "If not, the complete responsibility for the possibility of a continuation of bloodshed will be fully and wholly on the conscience of the regime ruling the territory of Ukraine."</p>



<p>The prime minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77p5n1ESb6c" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">condemned</a> the ploy.</p>



<p>"This is plainly in breach of international law. It's a violation, a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine," Johnson said. "It is a repudiation of the Minsk process and&nbsp;the Minsk agreements, and I think it's a very ill omen and a very dark sign."</p>



<p>Putin's speech wasn't helpful to already-volatile and hurting markets. US markets were closed for Presidents' Day, but the UK's FTSE 100 and Germany's DAX both fell. The FTSE 100 dropped by 1.14%, while the DAX fell by almost 2.1%. </p>

<p>Bitcoin took a mild hit, starting the day positive, but ending the business day down by 0.25%. Ether remained positive to close up 1.52%. Terra, a top-ten altcoin, seemed to ignore the global uncertainty with an 8.5% daily pump.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stocks extend losses as investors weigh likelihood of Russia invading Ukraine</h3>



<p>Equity and crypto markers prolonged their downturn Friday as the prospects of a war between Russia and Ukraine ramped up. </p>



<p>Russia President Vladimir Putin and Belarus <meta charset="utf-8">leader Alexander Lukashenko <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O84L1ldJQRE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unveiled a plan</a> for joint military drills along Ukraine's border — the latest sign of aggression in the eyes of the US.</p>



<p>All indices and major cryptos fell on the news, <meta charset="utf-8">with the S&amp;P 500 dropping by 0.72% and the Nasdaq declining 1.14%.</p>



<p>Putin maintains the drills are not a threat, calling them "purely defense in nature." The exercises are already underway, and the Russian leader said "one of the serious events in this complex of military cooperation" is slated for Saturday. </p>



<p><meta charset="utf-8">"These exercises are purely defensive in nature and do not threaten anyone."</p>



<p><meta charset="utf-8">The Dow and Russell 2000 took hits as well, dropping by 0.68% and 0.92%, respectively. Bitcoin and ether extended major Thursday losses as bitcoin dipped another 1.11% and ether lost 3.21% by the close of stock markets.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Biden says Russia could invade Ukraine 'within the next several days'</h3>



<p>US President Joe Biden today <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/02/17/remarks-by-president-biden-before-marine-one-departure-14/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine is now "very high." </p>



<p>Biden added, "They have not moved any of their troops out.&nbsp;They’ve moved more troops in." </p>



<p>The US leader also said there is reason to believe Russia is engaged in a so-called false-flag operation in an effort to give Russian forces a pretense to invade Ukraine. "Every indication we have is they’re prepared to go into Ukraine," he added.</p>



<p>He was then asked when such a move by Russia was likely to happen, to which he responded, "My sense is this will happen within the next several days."</p>



<p>Crypto and stock markets plunged on the news, with the Dow Jones index suffering its worst fall so far of 2022. The sharp reversal from news earlier this week that Putin was planning to pull troops back from the border has many investors fearful of volatility and anticipating more downward pressure on markets.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Executive order on crypto may come as early as next week</h3>



<p>Sources <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/biden-order-on-crypto-oversight-expected-next-week-source-says-173452499.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">claim</a> that Biden's administration is preparing to issue an executive order on cryptocurrencies as early as next week. The wide-ranging order will direct various agencies to study different aspects of digital assets.</p>



<p>The US Treasury, State Department and Office of the Attorney General are to study central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). The Financial Stability Oversight Council will review the stability of crypto. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is to study how crypto can impact market competition and the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission are to look at market protection.</p>



<p>Should such a broad executive order come to fruition, it will speed up the process of crypto regulation in the United States. Some investors welcome crypto regulation and see it as a step of maturity while many fear these different agencies will overregulate the industry.</p>



<p>The combination of regulatory fears and the potential for conflict in Europe hit markets hard. The S&amp;P 500 dropped 2.14% while the Nasdaq and Dow dropped by 2.96% and 1.78% respectively. Crypto markets had an even worse day, with bitcoin falling 7.3% and ether falling by 7.4% by the close of equity markets.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">US and NATO claim Russia is not actually removing troops from Ukraine’s border</h3>



<p>The US and NATO <a href="https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/opinions_191839.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">claimed</a> Wednesday that Russia had not removed any troops from Ukraine’s border, as they <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/market-wrap-crypto-pumps-after-putin-pledges-to-partially-pull-back-troops/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> they would begin doing on Tuesday. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg noted the lack of deescalation from Russia in a press conference Wednesday.</p>



<p>“Allies welcome all diplomatic efforts. There are signs from Moscow that diplomacy could continue, but so far, we do not see any sign of deescalation on the ground. No withdrawals of troops or equipment. This may of course change. However, what we see today is that Russia maintains a massive invasion force ready to attack with high-end capabilities from Crimea to Belarus,” said Stoltenberg.</p>



<p>“This is the biggest concentration of forces in Europe since the Cold War,” he added.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fed minutes report boosts markets in late session</h3>



<p>The news of Russia’s lack of deescalation at the Ukrainian border pulled markets down for most of the trading day, but the release of the Fed minutes <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/files/fomcminutes20220126.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> from the Federal Open Markets Committee (FOMC) meeting that took place from Jan. 25-26 this year helped to boost markets later in the day.</p>



<p>The report showed that the Fed would continue to take a methodical and slow approach to raising interest rates as opposed to aggressively raising them to combat inflation more quickly.</p>



<p>The federal funds rate will remain at its current level until the FOMC meeting from March 15–16, 2022. Many market participants feared the Fed would move to quickly raise interest rates, which could lead to a decline in the market. </p>



<p>After being down most of the day on the news of Russia’s continued threatening presence on the Ukrainian border, the S&amp;P 500 ended the day up by 0.09%. The Nasdaq followed a similar route, dropping as much as 1.49% during the day but recovering to close down just 0.12%. Bitcoin and ether fell by 1.05% and 1.60% respectively. </p>
